Treating Sour and Acidic Natural Gas
Natural gas gathered from subsurface reservoirs frequently contains acid gas contaminants, notably Carbon Dioxide ($CO_2$) and Hydrogen Sulfide ($H_2S$). These components not only cause severe corrosion in carbon steel pipelines but also lower the heating value of sales gas below contractual standards (typically $< 2-3\%\ CO_2$ and $< 4\text{ ppm}\ H_2S$).
The Chemistry of Amine Treating
The Acid Gas Removal Unit (AGRU) utilizes an aqueous alkanolamine solvent, such as accelerated Methyldiethanolamine (**aMDEA**).
1. **Absorption in Contactor Column**: Sour gas enters the bottom of the absorber tower at high pressure ($~800-1000\text{ psig}$) and flows counter-currently against lean amine entering from the top. The amine weakly bonds with acid gas molecules through exothermic acid-base reactions. 2. **Flash Regeneration**: Rich amine leaves the contactor bottom, passes through a flash drum where dissolved light hydrocarbons flash off, and enters the amine stripper column. 3. **Thermal Stripping**: Fire-Heated Reboilers (FHR) or Waste Heat Boilers supply heat ($~120-125°C$) to reverse the chemical bonds, boiling off $CO_2$ and $H_2S$ out the top while regenerated lean amine is pumped back to the absorber.
Field Challenge: Preventing Amine Foaming
The most common operational upset in an AGRU is **foaming** inside the contactor column. When foaming occurs: - Differential pressure (DP) across trays rises abruptly. - Amine carryover enters downstream chillers or dehydrators, causing chemical loss and contamination. - Sweet gas purity drops immediately.
**Key Mitigation Strategies for Operators**: - **Inlet Separation**: Ensure upstream filter-coalescers catch liquid hydrocarbon droplets and pipeline solids before they contact the amine. - **Temperature Margin**: Keep lean amine feed temperature at least $5°C$ higher than the inlet gas temperature to prevent heavy hydrocarbons from condensing into the solvent. - **Antifoam Injection**: Use silicone or glycol-based antifoam strategically as a corrective measure, not a permanent substitute for clean filtration.
